Murunga (Moringa oleifera) grows in the corner of countless Sri Lankan gardens, dropping long ribbed pods into the curry pot. Elsewhere it is sold as a sachet of green powder with claims printed on the packet. The plant is genuinely nutritious — but the famous claims about it are built on a comparison that quietly cheats, and it is worth knowing which parts are real.
Botanical and Cultural Background
Murunga is a fast-growing deciduous tree of the Moringaceae family, reaching ten metres, with feathery compound leaves, cream flowers and the distinctive long pods that give it its English name, drumstick tree. It thrives in poor soil and drought, which is much of why it matters.
In Sri Lanka murunga is food first and medicine second. The pods go into coconut-milk curry, the leaves into mallum, and the flowers are eaten too. It is a tree that quietly feeds households.

What the Research Shows
First, the famous nutrition claims need unpicking. You will read that moringa has more vitamin C than oranges, more calcium than milk and more potassium than bananas. These comparisons take dried leaf powder and weigh it against fresh foods, gram for gram. Drying removes most of the water, so of course the powder wins — you could make the same claim for dried spinach. A realistic teaspoon of moringa powder is a few grams; nobody eats 100g of it. Compared fresh and honestly, murunga leaves are a genuinely good leafy green with useful vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron — which is a real thing to be, without the sleight of hand.
Research on Moringa oleifera has examined antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, blood-glucose-lowering and lipid-lowering activity, and identified isothiocyanates, flavonoids and phenolic acids. Most of this is laboratory and animal work; human trials are small and of mixed quality. Reviews of moringa for diabetes and cholesterol generally conclude the evidence is preliminary.
Where murunga genuinely earns its reputation is as food: a hardy, drought-tolerant, nutrient-dense green in places where that matters. That is a serious contribution and it does not need embellishing.
How Murunga Is Prepared
Murunga mallum: Leaves stripped, chopped and lightly cooked with grated coconut, onion and turmeric. Cooking with coconut helps absorb the fat-soluble vitamin A.
Drumstick curry: Pods cut into lengths and cooked in coconut milk.
Leaf powder: Leaves dried in shade and ground; a teaspoon added to food.
Safety and Precautions
The leaves and pods are food and are safe; the root and bark are not. This distinction matters more than anything else here. Murunga root and bark contain toxic alkaloids including spirochin, and are traditionally abortifacient — they must not be taken in pregnancy, and are best avoided altogether. The gap between "murunga is safe" and "every part of murunga is safe" has caused real harm.
In pregnancy, eat the leaves and pods as food if you like, but avoid root, bark and concentrated leaf extracts or supplements without medical advice.
If you take diabetes medication, be aware murunga may lower blood glucose, so large medicinal quantities alongside treatment can add up — tell your doctor. It may also lower blood pressure, which is relevant if you take antihypertensives, and may interact with thyroid medication. Large amounts of leaf powder can cause digestive upset and a laxative effect. Nursing mothers should note that supply problems deserve a lactation consultant first; the human evidence for moringa as a galactagogue is limited.
