Heen Undupiyaliya (Desmodium triflorum) is a tiny, creeping groundcover with small purple-pink flowers and distinctive three-part leaves. Despite being frequently mistaken for a common lawn weed, it is an extremely valuable cooling herb in Sri Lankan traditional medicine, predominantly used to treat dysentery, heal wounds, and cool the body.
Medicinal Uses
- Dysentery and Diarrhea: The plant is highly astringent and cooling. A decoction made from the fresh leaves is one of the most effective traditional remedies for quickly halting severe diarrhea, bloody dysentery, and stomach cramps.
- Rapid Wound Healing: The crushed leaves possess powerful antiseptic properties. When applied to fresh cuts, ulcers, and sores, they stop bleeding, prevent infection, and drastically accelerate tissue regeneration.
- Cooling the Body: Consumed as a light herbal gruel (Kenda) or decoction, it acts as an internal refrigerant, flushing out excessive body heat, reducing burning sensations in the urine, and cooling irritated eyes.
- Respiratory Relief: It is occasionally used to soothe asthma and dry coughs, as the cooling nature helps pacify the heat generated by excessive coughing.
Traditional Remedies
- Decoction for Dysentery: A handful of the freshly washed whole plant (Heen Undupiyaliya) is boiled in water. Drinking a cup of this liquid twice a day solidifies the stool and cures dysentery almost immediately.
- Instant First Aid for Cuts: If someone sustains a minor cut or scrape in the garden, villagers will instantly pluck Heen Undupiyaliya, crush it between their fingers, and press the juice and pulp onto the wound to stop the bleeding and prevent infection.
- Herbal Gruel (Kola Kenda): The juice of the leaves is mixed with rice flour and coconut milk to make a delicious Kola Kenda, heavily recommended during the hot dry season to prevent heatstrokes and dehydration.
Precautions
Heen Undupiyaliya is extremely safe for both external application and internal consumption. Since it grows low to the ground and spreads like a carpet, ensure that the plant is washed very thoroughly to remove all soil and potential animal contaminants before use.
