Introduction to Bulu

Bulu (Terminalia bellirica), known as Bahera in Ayurveda, is a large deciduous tree. Its astringent fruit is one of the three miraculous ingredients in the famous Ayurvedic formulation "Triphala" (alongside Aralu and Nelli). It is highly regarded for its ability to balance the Kapha dosha (mucus and water elements) in the body.

Core Health Benefits

  • Soothes Sore Throats and Coughs: Bulu is an excellent remedy for respiratory conditions. It clears excessive mucus from the lungs, soothes a scratchy throat, and relieves hoarseness of voice.
  • Improves Digestion: It acts as a mild laxative, helping to cleanse the digestive tract and relieve constipation without causing cramping.
  • Supports Eye Health: Used externally, Bulu extract is beneficial in treating eye infections and conjunctivitis.
  • Wound Healing: Its strong astringent and antimicrobial properties make the fruit paste effective in stopping bleeding and healing skin ulcers.

How to Use

The dried fruit pulp (without the seed) is the part used in medicinal preparations.

  • For Coughs and Sore Throat: Mix 1/2 teaspoon of dried Bulu powder with 1 teaspoon of honey. Slowly lick this paste 2-3 times a day to relieve a sore throat, dry cough, or asthma.
  • Triphala Powder: Bulu is best consumed as part of Triphala (equal parts Aralu, Bulu, and Nelli). Mix 1/2 teaspoon of Triphala powder in warm water before bed for a complete digestive cleanse.

Precautions

Bulu should not be consumed in extremely large quantities as it may cause nausea or vomiting. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid consuming it as a standalone supplement without medical advice.
