Bim Kohomba (Munronia pinnata) is a highly precious, rare, and endemic medicinal plant in Sri Lanka. It is a small shrub that grows close to the ground, and in traditional Ayurveda and Deshiya Chikitsa (indigenous medicine), the entire plant is considered a medicine of the highest order, particularly for treating severe fevers.
Medicinal Uses
- Malaria and Severe Fevers: Bim Kohomba is historically famous as a potent antipyretic (fever reducer) and anti-malarial drug. It has been used for centuries to treat persistent, treatment-resistant fevers.
- Blood Purification: The bitter principles in the plant act as a powerful detoxifier, clearing impurities from the blood and healing severe skin conditions like eczema and persistent boils.
- Anti-inflammatory: Extracts of the plant are used to reduce swelling and inflammation in the body, making it useful in treating rheumatoid arthritis.
- Digestive Health: Like many bitter herbs, it stimulates the liver, increases bile secretion, and improves overall digestion.
Traditional Remedies
- Decoction for Fevers: The most common traditional use is a decoction made by boiling the entire dried Bim Kohomba plant. Drinking this extremely bitter liquid brings down high fevers rapidly.
- Treatment for Boils: A paste made from the crushed leaves and roots is applied externally over chronic boils and infected wounds to draw out pus and promote healing.
- Post-Viral Fatigue: After a severe viral infection (like Dengue or Chikungunya), a diluted herbal tea of Bim Kohomba is given to restore energy and clear residual toxins from the body.
Precautions
Because of its extreme bitterness and potent active compounds, Bim Kohomba should be consumed strictly under the guidance of an Ayurvedic physician. Furthermore, due to its high medicinal value and over-harvesting, this plant is now endangered in the wild in Sri Lanka. It should be sourced ethically and sustainably.
