Introduction to Neem (Kohomba)
Neem (Azadirachta indica), locally known as "Kohomba" in Sri Lanka, is often referred to as the "village pharmacy" due to its extensive medicinal properties. For over two millennia, neem has been a cornerstone of traditional Ayurvedic and indigenous medicine in South Asia.
Health Benefits and Uses
- Skin Health: Neem leaves are famous for their antibacterial and antifungal properties. A paste made from crushed neem leaves is highly effective against acne, eczema, and minor wounds.
- Immunity Booster: Consuming neem leaf tea or chewing a few fresh leaves daily helps purify the blood, flush out toxins, and strengthen the immune system.
- Oral Hygiene: Neem twigs have been used as natural toothbrushes for centuries. Their active compounds fight plaque and prevent gum disease.
- Anti-inflammatory: The high concentration of antioxidants in neem helps reduce inflammation, making it beneficial for conditions like arthritis.
Scientific Backing
Modern science has validated what traditional practitioners have known for centuries. Neem contains over 130 biologically active compounds, with azadirachtin and nimbidin being the most potent. These compounds have demonstrated significant antimicrobial, antiviral, and antioxidant activities in numerous pharmacological studies.
How to Use Neem Leaves
- Neem Tea: Boil 3-5 clean neem leaves in a cup of water for 5 minutes. Strain and drink (beware, it is quite bitter!).
- Neem Paste: Crush fresh leaves with a few drops of water to create a thick paste. Apply directly to skin blemishes or wounds.
- Neem Bath: Add a handful of neem leaves to warm bathwater to soothe skin irritations and body odor.
Safety and Precautions
While generally safe when applied topically or consumed in moderation, excessive consumption of neem leaves can cause digestive distress. Pregnant women and individuals trying to conceive should avoid consuming neem, as it has traditionally been used for contraceptive purposes.
