Introduction to Pawatta

Pawatta (Justicia adhatoda), also known as Adhatoda or Vasaka, is a large evergreen shrub that holds a prominent place in Ayurvedic medicine for treating respiratory ailments. Its leaves emit a distinct odor and are known for their powerful ability to clear the lungs and airways.

Core Health Benefits

  • Relieves Coughs and Asthma: Pawatta is a potent bronchodilator and expectorant. It relaxes the airway muscles, making it easier to breathe for asthma patients, and helps expel thick mucus from the lungs.
  • Treats Bronchitis: It is highly effective in reducing inflammation in the respiratory tract, providing relief from acute and chronic bronchitis.
  • Fights Tuberculosis: Traditionally, its strong antibacterial properties have been used to support the treatment of tuberculosis and severe lung infections.
  • Reduces Bleeding: The juice of the leaves is known to stop internal bleeding, such as bleeding from gums, nosebleeds, and heavy menstrual bleeding.

How to Use

The leaves are the primary medicinal part, though the flowers and roots are also used.

  • Pawatta Leaf Juice: Crush fresh Pawatta leaves and extract the juice. Mix 1 teaspoon of this juice with 1 teaspoon of honey and consume it twice a day. This is an incredible remedy for severe coughs and asthma.
  • Pawatta Tea: Boil a few dried Pawatta leaves in water. Drink the decoction to clear chest congestion.

Precautions

Because it is a strong expectorant, pregnant women should avoid large doses of Pawatta as it may stimulate uterine contractions. High doses may also cause vomiting or diarrhea.
