Introduction to Rath Handun
Rath Handun (Pterocarpus santalinus), commonly known as Red Sandalwood, is a highly prized tree in Ayurvedic medicine. Unlike regular sandalwood, it does not have a strong fragrance, but its deep red heartwood is legendary in Sri Lanka for its cooling properties and its ability to treat a wide array of skin conditions.
Core Health Benefits
- Clears Acne and Blemishes: Rath Handun is incredibly effective at reducing acne, fading acne scars, and clearing dark spots, leaving the skin glowing and even-toned.
- Soothes Sunburn and Heat Rashes: Its intense cooling properties make it an excellent remedy for severely sunburned skin, heat rashes, and eczema.
- Reduces Pigmentation: Regular application helps remove tan and pigmentation.
- Anti-inflammatory: It actively reduces swelling and redness on the skin.
How to Use
The heartwood is usually rubbed on a stone with water or rose water to create a paste, or used as a fine powder.
- Rath Handun Face Pack: Mix Red Sandalwood powder with a little rose water and a pinch of turmeric. Apply it to the face, leave it for 15 minutes, and wash it off. Doing this twice a week dramatically clears acne and brightens the skin.
- Cooling Body Rub: For heat rashes or eczema, apply the paste directly to the affected areas for instant, cooling relief.
Precautions
Rath Handun is extremely safe for external application on all skin types. Due to its highly cooling nature, individuals with severe asthma or chronic cold conditions should avoid applying it to the chest or head during cold weather.
