Aswenna (Alysicarpus vaginalis) is a low-growing, perennial herb with small pinkish-purple flowers, commonly found in the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka. In traditional indigenous medicine, the entire Aswenna plant is celebrated as a profound diuretic and a primary treatment for kidney and urinary tract diseases.
Medicinal Uses
- Kidney and Urinary Tract Health: Aswenna is a powerful natural diuretic. It increases urine production, helping to flush out toxins, bacteria, and small kidney stones from the urinary tract. It is heavily prescribed for urinary tract infections (UTIs) and painful urination (dysuria).
- Fever and Body Heat: The herb has a strong cooling effect on the body. A decoction made from Aswenna is used to bring down high fevers and reduce excessive body heat.
- Liver Function: It is traditionally believed to cleanse the liver and spleen, improving their function and aiding in the treatment of mild jaundice.
- Wound Healing: The crushed leaves are applied externally to accelerate the healing of minor cuts, wounds, and skin irritations.
Traditional Remedies
- Decoction for Urinary Stones: The entire plant (roots, stem, leaves, and flowers) is dried, chopped, and boiled in water. Drinking this decoction daily helps dissolve urinary stones and clears severe urinary infections.
- Cooling Herbal Drink: For individuals suffering from heaty bodies, burning sensations in the eyes, or summer boils, a light tea made from Aswenna leaves acts as a rapid internal coolant.
- Joint Swelling: A paste made from the fresh leaves is applied over swollen, painful joints to reduce inflammation.
Precautions
Due to its strong diuretic action, individuals consuming Aswenna decoctions must ensure they drink plenty of plain water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. It should be used cautiously by those who already have low blood pressure.
